You Don’t Hate Your Job — You Just Want to Work for Yourself

starting a business Jul 16, 2025

If your 9–5 is fine but your gut says there’s something more — listen.

You’re Not Ungrateful — You’re Growing

Let's set the scenario, and you tell us if this sounds familiar: you’re doing well at your job. You hit your deadlines. You get good feedback. Your boss likes you. And for the most part, you’re...fine. But something just isn't all the way right. Sound at all like you? We know that feeling well. But we want you to hear us: that’s not necessarily ungratefulness. That feeling could mean growth.

Maybe you're just looking for MORE. And don't get us wrong, you might not hate your job. It might be paying all your bills and providing you a decent life. But that "more" that you're looking for just isn't present in this current job. And if you're anything like us, you might feel like you have to shove it all down and ignore it. But what if that's the opposite of what you need to be doing?

Signs You Might Be Meant to Start a Business

There is a decent-sized chasm between sort of enjoying your job and loving it. Yet, we can almost hear the voices of disagreement: aren't we being a little dramatic? Like, come on, having a good job is a privilege. We aren't denying that.

However, we think that a lot of people are taught to fall in line with the traditional employment route when that's not necessarily the best fit for them or the best use of their talents. It's just what so many of us were told to do growing up. We were told to seek the "stable job," something "comfortable."

But comfort can be a trap. It’s warm and stable and hard to walk away from.

In that place of comfort, you are slowly atrophying and disconnecting from yourself.

You might not hate your job. But you might not love what it represents: a cap on your creativity. A place where your ideas collect dust. A role where you’re only using 60% of your capacity.

You’re Allowed to Want More — Even If You Like Your Job

Dreaming of your own business doesn’t make you entitled or a bad employee. It makes you brave.

You can love your team, respect your boss, and still want work that reflects you.

It doesn't make you ungrateful or — worse — delusional. Maybe you're right where you need to be... working out something new for yourself.

How to Plan an Exit from Your 9–5 Without Burning Bridges

So what do you do with these thoughts?

You plan. You start documenting what’s on your heart, even if it doesn’t make perfect sense yet.

Start with this:

  • What do I care about changing in the world or in my industry?

  • Who lights me up? Who do I actually want to serve?

  • What could I offer that would make someone’s life better, easier, or more meaningful?

Don’t worry about building the business yet. Just write it all down. Let it breathe.

Talk to someone you trust — not someone who’s going to rain on your parade, but someone who sees your potential. You don’t need permission. But you do need support.

What to Plan Before You Ever Quit

If things still feel aligned after that, it might be time to build a plan.

We’re not big on reckless quitting. We are big on intentional exits. Here’s what to think about:

  • A mission that feels personal and clear

  • A dream client that actually inspires you

  • An offer that creates real value

  • A financial safety net that gives you breathing room

  • A plan for slow, messy, courageous action

Because here’s the truth: You don’t need to be ready. You need to be willing.

This Isn’t About Rage Quitting. It’s About Rising Slowly.

You’re allowed to build your dream without burning your current job to the ground.

You can take small steps. Quiet ones. You can build slowly, strategically, and with your sanity intact.

You don’t need a viral moment. You don’t need a meltdown. You don’t need to be anyone but you.

You just need to start.
