How To Start A Business When You Feel Unqualifited

How to Start a Business When You Feel Unqualified (But Know You’re Meant For More)

starting a business Jul 09, 2025

You don’t need more credentials. You need more clarity.

If you've ever Googled how to start a business when you're not confident or starting a business without experience, then you already know the mental spiral:

"Who am I to do this?"
"I don't have the right background."
"I'm probably going to mess the whole thing up…"

Sound familiar?

We've been there! You have big dreams, but how to get there feels muddy, and that makes you feel like crud and sooo unsure about whether or not you can even start. But here's the truth... chances are you're just stuck in a loop that says you have to feel ready before you start. But that’s not how real businesses get built. And we know, because we've done this a few times now.

Imagine two people sitting in a small apartment furiously typing "how to start a business," and filling multiple Google Docs with answers we'd patched together from blogs and YouTube videos. The to do lists were long, and the answers to our questions didn't feel comforting. Who the heck did we think we were? But we moved forward anyway. We didn't feel ready, but we knew what we wanted.

And another note, we want you to understand that you don’t need a certificate or a degree to be qualified. We don't have degrees! Honestly, a LOT of professionals, and big names in the business world don't either. Unless it's specifically required by law, most businesses can thrive without the formalities.

If you want to get the checklist that will help you skip the line, so to speak, and give you the major items you need to think about when you're looking to start a business, download our free checklist Daydream to Doing - Without the Corporate B.S.

The Lie of “Ready”

Let’s be brutally honest: Nobody feels 100% ready. Not even the people you look up to.

The coaches you admire?
The creative business owners crushing it on Instagram?
The designer with the 4-month waitlist?

They all started messy. They had doubts, and most of them still do. But the difference between them and someone else who had the same potential, but isn't doing anything with it, or at the same level? They didn’t wait for permission. They chose to start anyway. So can you my friend!

Readiness is a myth sold to you by perfectionism. The truth is: you get ready by getting started. And then it's one foot after the other.

Confidence Is a Byproduct, Not a Prerequisite

Confidence doesn’t just appear one day, floating down from the sky in a motivational cloud. It’s built.

Here’s the real order of operations:

Action → Clarity → Confidence

You take one small action.
You learn something.
You get clearer.
You do it again.
Confidence starts to show up because you’ve proven you can move, not because you waited for the perfect moment.

If you feel like an imposter right now? Welcome. That’s not a sign you’re wrong. It’s a sign you care enough to do it well. We struggle with imposter syndrome all the time. It's a part of being human. So know that you're in the club. But you don't have to stay there.

Start Small, But Start Real

You don’t need a 12-step funnel or a viral launch plan. But you do need to get real about three things:

1. Who do you want to help?

Get specific. Not just “women” or “creatives.” Not just "men over 30." Who are they really? What are they struggling with? What are they searching for at 2am?

2. What are you offering them?

Is it a service? A product? An experience? Spell it out simply. If you can’t describe it in one sentence, it’s not ready yet, but that’s okay. Keep refining.

3. Where are you showing up?

Pick one platform and start. You don’t need to be everywhere, especially in the beginning. Choose where your people are and start posting, sharing, and connecting.

Business isn’t built in theory. It’s built in the doing. Every step you take will give you more knowledge, more clarity, and more confidence. Your mind and heart will grow. So let's tap in to that for a minute.

What You Really Need: Belief, Support, and Structure

If you’re feeling unqualified to start a business, here’s the checklist that actually matters:

  • Belief in yourself (even if it’s only 51% right now)

  • Support from people who get it (not just your cousin who thinks Etsy or a digital product is a phase)

  • A simple structure to follow (so you’re not guessing every step of the way)

This isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about committing to find them, one move at a time. And you're in the right place.
